The Legacy of Laila Shawa (1940–2022)
Laila Shawa was a pioneering Palestinian visual artist born in Gaza in 1940, often called the "mother of Arab revolutionary art." Known for her bold, vibrant use of colour and her unflinching commentary on Palestinian identity and resilience, her work is displayed in the British Museum, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, and major collections worldwide.
Her iconic Palestinian Poppy Field series — vivid poppies blooming defiantly across the traditional kuffiyeh pattern — is the artistic heart of this collection. Laila passed away in 2022, making these scarves among the last authorized tributes to her extraordinary artistic legacy.
